Phil Thompson swaps his Michelin-starred restaurant... for a Transit Van

A roadside catering truck isn't quite the establishment in which you would expect to find a Michelin-starred Chef, but that's exactly where you would have found Phil Thompson recently when he swapped the kitchen at Auberge du Lac for a food van just off the A1(M).

The reason for this change in scenery? Friday 19th August saw Phil help car giant Ford celebrate their 100th birthday, by taking part in their Centenary Tour. Phil made 100 bleary-eyed Ford drivers' days by providing them with a substantial breakfast - bacon rolls and blackberry smoothies, as they stopped to see him on their way to work.

Phil was joined in the kitchen by his Mum, Kathy Thompson, who worked for 43 years in the Ford canteens, serving meals to the thousands of car workers at the firm's Dagenham plant.

Phil, usually quite sedate in the kitchen, found working with his Mum a daunting prospect. "First thing she said was 'You need a shave' - just what you want to hear at 5.30am! Then it was that I'd over-cooked the bacon, under-cooked the bacon, over-buttered the rolls, under-buttered the rolls. Cooking 78 covers in two hours is easier than being shouted at by my Mum!"

Ford's birthday celebrations passed with great success, and while it wasn't Phil's usual surroundings, he thoroughly enjoyed meeting members of the local community and providing them with the most important meal of the day.
