Phil Thompson featured on the BBC

Auberge du Lac's very own Phil Thompson featured in this year's BBC TWO series Great British Menu, where the challenge was to cook for the ultimate street party: The People's Banquet.

Competing in the South East regional heat against Tom Aikens and Tom Kerridge, Phil went into the competition as the underdog, and a nervous one at that.

"I was as nervous as a teenager on his first date! Incredibly nervous. More nervous than I've ever been in my life. Coming in as the underdog, against two 2-Michelin Star chefs both highly talented and with a wealth of experience, I was like a rabbit caught in the headlights!"

The theme for the series was cooking for the people. Britain's best chefs from across the country were all vying for a space in the final, but to get there they had to rise up to the challenge and create awe inspiring food that could be shared at the ultimate street party.

Phil fought valiantly, but was pipped to the post by Tom Aikens, who scored one more point than him overall, and went through with Tom Kerridge to cook for the judges. Disappointed though Phil was, he thoroughly enjoyed himself and hopes that this is not the last we see of him in front of the camera.

"I was sincerely gutted to go out early, but I feel like I held my own against two very brilliant chefs. I let my nerves get the better of me, and made some silly mistakes but Great British Menu was the hardest thing I've ever put myself through. I found it mentally and physically draining at the time, but the experience was a huge rush of adrenaline for me and looking back at it, I loved my time on the programme."
